4 out of 5 stars Very good general purpose lens   September 2, 2010
Liberty
This lens takes decent pictures at both extremes of zoom. I've read some reviews and while I'm sure they are accurate, I just don't believe my photography skills will match this lens' capabilities for quite some time. With a $60 rebate until sept. 30, it's a great lens to learn with at a super price.

4 out of 5 stars Better then expected.   September 1, 2010

When I first bought this lens, I thought the color would be a bit distorted based on other comments. When in fact the color is nice. Not professional grade, but just right for my family. I have two little girls that run a lot, and for the most part, this lens can keep up with them. There are times when the focus is slow; but not often. Always use a tripod when shooting past 120, you will get to much motion and the lens can not help with that. Our Paris photos came out good with my Nikon lens, but our Bavaria photos came out just as nice with this Tamron. Bottom line, if you are not a professional or have less then a professionals budget, this is a great lens you will be happy with.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either   August 28, 2010

I'm an amateur photographer who's been shooting for the past 2 years. I travel quite a bit, so when I was lens hunting I was looking for a good all-purpose lens with an inexpensive price tag. Canon's version was too expensive, and most reviews I read favored this lens to the Sigma. It also helped that Tamron was offering a [...] rebate, bringing the cost below [...] (Amazon Warehouse - New).

I bought this lens a few months ago and have used it extensively since then. It has been a great learning tool and has allowed me to travel with only one lens. Here's what I think:

Pros:

1. Price
2. Zoom range - comes in handy especially when shooting outdoor events. It's 200mm zoom capacity (on my Canon 300D), has allowed me to capture candid shots at events without getting too close to my subjects
3. Macro
4. Lock - a useful feature that prevents the lens from creeping out especially when carrying your camera over your shoulder

Cons:
1. Not sharp, especially in telephoto range - Though you can use this to your advantage when clicking portraits to get a softer feel
2. f/3.5-6.3
3. Poor low-light performance
4. Slow autofocus - usually have to switch to manual in lower light
5. Heavy - it's a little big for my 300D. Shoulders usually end up hurting after a while, but maybe that's inevitable (or I should get a better strap). Its weight also causes some unwanted shake when using handheld.

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed, but considering it's price, I understand that it can't be great at everything. If you're an amateur who mostly shoot/wants to shoot landscapes and architecture, I would not recommend this lens to you. If you shoot macro, flowers, and portraits, it's a decent learning tool. If you have the money, I would suggest you start reading reviews for something better.

2 out of 5 stars Grey Market product from Amazon - Beware!   August 6, 2010
GaryS (St. Louis, MO United States)
According to my invoice, the item was sold directly by Amazon.com, LLC. However, when I shipped the item in for warranty repair, Tamron informed me the lens did not have a serial number which probably meant it was a grey market product. Because there was no serial number, the warranty was voided.

I don't know where this serial number is supposed to be, but I doubt it fell off. This can only mean Amazon is sourcing this product from a questionable source hoping that there will be no need for repair.

Amazon did however return the item for a full refund. They did not explain how the item could come without a serial number.

I don't know how this happened but it does cause me to be concerned about where they are getting their products and if they are going to be covered by warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Good for basics, not for professionals   August 3, 2010

This lens is appealing for its wide to zoom abilities. BUT it has a very VERY small focus. The focus seems to move around constantly, especially if there is any kinds of movement. It seems good for still life but for people it does not work well. I tried shooting a wedding and a portrait with it and found many of the images were out of focus and while I was working with it the focus kept moving all over the place.
