With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM is a remarkable lens with outstanding image quality that will take your photography into new dimensions and areas of dramatic expression. The super-wide zoom not only gives you the freedom to get exactly what you want in the shot, it dramatically alters perspective to allow for dynamic expression. The lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. Creative photographers can use this phenomenon to create excellent separation between subject and background for a strong sense of presence, or for a pan-focus effect with everything from foreground to background sharply in focus. Exceptionally light and compact for its focal length range, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM also has an incredibly close minimum focusing distance of just 24cm. A ring-type USM works in concert with the camera to provide super-fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking - with full manual override available at any time. Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare. A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and getting your subject or model to stand out from the background.

 Very good but could have been better September 1, 2010

This lens, in its limited EF-S mount, could have been more than it is, simply by either improving the mecanical construction ( re-release it as an 'L' lens ) and/or lowering the price. As it stands, the mount restricks its use to an APS-C camera; if one upgrades to a full size sensor, this lens becomes immediately unusable.
In its present form, the mecanical construction ( for Canon ) could be better, as the weight seems to primarily due to the optics, in that the construction materials appear to inculde an inordinate amount of plastic. Also, the lens hood - needed in a zoom or prime lens of this angle of view - is NOT included for the price, neither for that matter is the lens case. Both are available, but as separate purchases.
Optically, this lens is not at all bad, sharp across the field ONCE it is closed down 1-1/2 to 2 f/stops; but, again, for the price, it could be better.
Overall, the lens rates 3-1/2 to 4 stars, because for the price, it could be better.

Just got back from Yellowstone and downloaded my pictures. I have the 10/22 along with two L lenses (24/70 and 70/200 2.8 IS) that I use with my 50 D. This 10/22 was every bit as good as my L's. Great clarity and picture quality. There was no drop off in quality with the 10/22 when compared to my other L lenses. You won't go wrong with this lens.
Canon EF-S 10-22mm Takes Amazing Pics August 15, 2010

I recently bought this lens to add to my collection of lens with my Canon Rebel T2i DSLR. It takes amazing pictures in close quarter areas. This lens worked perfect for taking pictures of New York City. I was able to capture great shots of the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, etc. It's also great for taking pictures of rooms such as an office or any room in a house where a regular 18-55mm or even standard 50mm lens wouldn't help. It's well constructed unlike a lot of the kit lenses out there and is a tad heavy but not that bad. I would recommend this lens to anyone who wants to take a lot of scenic panoramic shots also, I got some amazing shots of the Brooklyn Bridge while out on a boat cruise in the harbor.
