Excellent Lens September 8, 2010 md7204 (No.Va, USA) I purchased this lens in June 2010. Since then, I have taken almost a thousand photos with it. I think the lens is excellent and would not hesitate to buy it again. If you are considering this lens, understand what you're getting into. This is a relatively slow lens (f4.5 on the 100mm end) and it's heavy. If you're carrying/shooting with it all day, it wears you out. The zoom mechanism is push/pull. It's not bad once you get used to it.
I currently use this lens on a Rebel XT (1.6x FOVC) which makes it a 160-640mm full-frame equivalent.
Also consider the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS L if you want more than 200mm but don't need 400mm (and still want L-Glass).
A versatile lens with one drawback September 7, 2010 Andi G. Noakes (Jackson, WY) This lens is great! I took it backpacking in the wilderness and to Yellowstone for the classic bear, bison, teton pictures. The images are better than any I have taken previously. I am excited to blow some of these up!
The drawback: obviously you only have about 2 true f-stops to start with. Shooting in the dark is possible, but takes a little more finesse considering the lack of f-stops.
Seriously, otherwise this lens is worth the money and a must-have for all true wildlife photographers. I am hoping to take it to Africa next year. I can't wait to see what it can do there!
great great lens August 28, 2010 Standingtree I love this one except for the way it changes focal lengths
I wish it were more like the 70-200mm L
Hope canon can improve on that.
One other thing I have to mention is that the sharpness is not as great at 400mm compared to lens from Sony
Overall, it is a cannot miss lens
The de-facto air show lens! August 14, 2010 He who spends too much (Chicago) Perfect for fast, outdoor (or well lit indoor) action photography. Push/Pull zoom is far more practical with fast moving subjects.
I read somewhere that IS auto-disables when mounted on a tripod(?), but I can still hear IS functioning while mounted on my monopod.

It's a good lens, but the Image Stabilization switch broke the first time I turned it on. Have since purchased a replacement lens and that switch appears to be solid. So far, so good.
